Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between WAM and GPA in Australian universities?
WAM (Weighted Average Mark) is the actual percentage average of all marks scored across your degree subjects, weighted by credit points. GPA converts your percentage into a 4-point or 7-point scale based on letter bands (HD, D, C, P).
What marks are required for High Distinction (HD) and Distinction (D)?
Across Australian universities (such as UNSW, Melbourne, USYD, Monash, and UQ), a High Distinction (HD) requires 85% or higher, Distinction (D) requires 75% to 84%, Credit (C) requires 65% to 74%, and a Pass (P) requires 50% to 64%.
How is a course final mark calculated with assignments and exams?
Multiply each assessment component mark by its percentage weight from the unit guide. For example, if coursework is 60% with an average of 75, and the final exam is 40%, scoring 80 on the final yields (75 × 0.60) + (80 × 0.40) = 45 + 32 = 77% (Distinction).
